Netbooks are very slow; don’t expect to do more than one thing at a time, beyond reading your email, etc. But they are very compact and you can get some that have long life batteries.
I have both a netbook and a laptop. I use the netbook when I travel – makes packing SO much easier. The netbook fits in my camera bag too; I can do all carry-ons now.
Although my netbook is very slow, if I’m patient I can do pretty much anything I can do on my laptop (even some simple photo edits), but I’d find it too frustrating to use that way for regular use.
If you get a laptop, get one with a dual core at least.
which is an entirely different question. A “netbook” is a tiny compact “notebook” with a slow CPU – so they are very different.
Actually, some people point out differences in the term “notebook” and “laptop,” but these days most people use the two terms interchangeably. Some years ago, when laptops got too hot for the average lap, there was a move to re-term them “notebooks.” But it hasn’t entirely been effective.
I personally wouldn’t buy an HP – I’d buy a Dell or a Toshiba. Gateway…maybe, depends on the price, certainly not a Gateway for $799 which seems really expensive. Maybe for $399 or $499…maybe.
